Anglers have the opportunity to catch a tagged trout worth $50,000 at Big Bear Lake’s Fishin’ for $50K Trout
Derby in June.     Fishin’ for $50K Trout Derby will be held Saturday, June 11 and Sunday, June 12 from 6 a.m. to
2 p.m. each day. Entry is $40 for adults and $25 for participants under age 16. Entries are limited to the first
750 registered anglers. Each contestant receives a free jar of Berkley PowerBait and a wristband that
provides discounts at participating Big Bear restaurants, shops and specialty services.

Big Bear Lake offers one of the top rated fishing locations in all of Southern California.  all current reports indicate that for yet another season, freshwater anglers of all types will enjoy the quality trout and bass found in the local waters at Big Bear Lake.

Hard to believe it has been in the low 70′s this weekend in Big Bear. A week ago we had a foot of snow on the ground, now it’s shorts and T-shirt time. But wait…what is in the forecast for Thursday? That nasty four letter word SNOW! Oh well, it is sprinter time in Big Bear (the season when Mother Nature can’t make her mind if it is spring or winter).
When the weather is good the trout fishing has been great! Plump holdovers in the pound and a half range are filling stringers for trollers and bait anglers alike, with a few fish coming in at two to three pounds. Bait anglers fishing PowerBait and/or nightcrawlers off the bottom with a leader length of 1 to 3 feet are doing well all along the North Shore from Stanfield Cutoff to Windy Pt. The west end of the lake is also producing trout, but the trout are more plentiful in the east due to tributary flow, shallower and warmer water. Don’t get too close to the streams though, DFG regulations prohibit fishing in the streams or the waters that outflow from them when the moving water is visible from Mrach 1st until May 25th.
Trollers working 3 to 4 colors of lead core with just about any color of Needlefish or Thomas Buoyants are getting the same results. Once again the east is best for the higher fish counts than the west. No real surface action yet, but look for that to change once the weather stabilizes and the insects begin to hatch. Water temperatures are uniform east to west and top to bottom at 47 degrees with plenty of oxygen throughout the water column.
Surprisingly a few avid bass anglers have found some bucket mouths along docks and rocks in the east end. No action for any other species at this time. Keep on eye on the weather and enjoy the fishing when you can.

WATER SPORTS IN BIG BEAR

If you can do it behind a boat, you can do it in the lake!  From jet ski rentals in Big Bear to wakeboarding, wake skating, water skiing, air chair,  tubing or the classic wave runners you can have fun in the sun on the water.  Big Bear Lake has become known as the place in the summer to go where there are no crowds and whether you own your own and tow it along, or you just want to go for a couple of hours, the marinas around the lake can give you a great time. Renting Wave Runners and Jet Skis in Big Bear seem to be the rage.  The thrill of speed coupled with the splash from the water make this summer fun another must do.  You need a drivers license and must be 18 to rent.

For more aggressive water action wake boarding and water skiing on Big Bear are the crowd pleasers.  The water is relatively calm so the ride is as smooth as silk.   Water skiing has always been one of the more popular lake sports, but be advised, wetsuits are welcome.  The water is melted snow!

That being said, it is still a lot of fun.  Plus, boating facilities stay open three seasons long, spring through autumn. With all this fun in the water, swimming in Big Bear is discouraged except at special beaches.

The latest rage is the Cable Park at Big Bear. Here you can learn to wake board, work on your tricks and moves, and learn why Big Bear is such a hot place to come wake boarding… all without having a boat!  That’s right, no boat. Think of a ski tow rope… overhead. Here it is thanks to the folks at the Cable Park over at Pleasure Point Marina.

For those who appreciate a little quieter time on the water, you can rent paddle boards, canoes and kayaks and pontoon boats to paddle your arms into oblivion. Big Bear Lake

The weather has settled into the Spring mode now, and the rainbow trout action has been good this week with limits of rainbows for both trollers and bait anglers fishing from shore. Department of Fish and Game plant is set for this week.

Shore fishing: The top areas are still along the north shore from Stanfield to Windy Point, and a lot of fish are still stacked up where water is flowing into the lake.

Trollers: mostly working three to four colors of leadcore and Needlefish or Thomas Buoyants with the best action in the east end. Water temperature has been uniform at 47 degrees. The bass bite has been improving with both smallmouth and largemouth showing in fair numbers around docks, rocky areas, and other shoreline structures.

May Trout Classic

The May Trout Classic will be held May 19-20, and there will be a $5,000 tagged trout this season. Applications for entry are available now and only the first 500 entries will be accepted. Cost is $65 per person and all money will go toward the cast payout for the top nine biggest trout or into a fund to plant the lake with more rainbow trout, including trophy fish.

Southern California’s most anticipated fishing event is back! Big Bear Lake’s Fishin’ for $50K gives angles an opportunity to catch a tagged trout worth $50,000 on Saturday, June 9 and Sunday, June 10. That’s right the bounty is set for $50,000 on a tagged trout that will swim the waters in search of some tasty bait or an illusive lure. Get your rod and reel and tackle box ready to hunt down this high-priced fish! In addition to the $50,000 fish there are opportunities to win $500 for largest trout caught on Berkley Power Bait, cash prizes for largest trout for adult male/female and junior boy/girl, plus quality raffle prizes and a chance to win a brand new fishing kayak. You can also get free entry into the event when you stay overnight or rent a pontoon boat. Registration is limited.
